Cancer is not a verdict: there is a treatment, and that needs to be accepted by everyone
It was launched on February 7 in YSMU. 50 specialists participated in palliative medicine training. The trainers were Justin Baker, the head of palliative medicine department at the children's research hospital after St.Jude, and Kernie Williams, a renowned specialist in pediatric oncology. The second conference of the Pediatric Oncology East and Mediterranean Group about childeren’s oncology was held on the initiative of Yerevan State Medical University after Mkhitar Heratsi: co-organisers are: The world’s largest children’s cancer center, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital(USA), and the American University of Beirut(Lebanon). It is the first time that Armenia organizes such a large-scale conference on pediatric oncology, which has great importance for the development of the sector.
The Pediatric Oncology East and Mediterranean Group consists of 70 centers of childhood cancer, of 23 different countries. A training “The role and assessment of nutrition for children with cancer” was held in YSMU within the framework of the second conference of the Pediatric Oncology East and Mediterranean Group.
On February 8 YSMU continued the courses preceding the osecond conference of the Pediatric Oncology East and Mediterranean Group. The main speakers at the February 8 training were Indian representative, pediatric hematologist, oncologist, Amita Trehan, Elena Lada from New York’s Columbia University, Roland Barr: pediatrician, pathology lecturer(Canada), and Indian dietologist Nancy Sakhni. The training includes lectures on the role and assessment of nutrition for children with cancer.

On February 9, Yerevan State Medical University hosted the second conference of the Pediatric Oncology East and Mediterranean Group, with more than 180 leading experts arriving in Armenia from 40 different countries. According to YSMU’s Rector Armen Muradyan, Armenia, like many other countries in the world, also does not abstain from pediatric oncology. “The main topic of the conference today is pediatric oncology issues such as nutrition, radiotherapy, surgery and complex treatment methods that are widely used in the world”, said Armen Muradyan.
Referring to the prevalence of disease in Armenia, the Rector of the YSMU noted that our country has made serious progress in recent years. “The diagnosis of childhood cancer remains one of the most serious problems. If 15 years ago mortality from infantile cancer was 50-60%, today we have the opportunity to provide up to 80% survival”, he emphasized, adding that the conference is binding because Yerevan particularly YSMU, was chosen as a platform where there are highly contributing professionals in children’s oncology who share their experiences.

Renowned pediatric oncology specialists
were given Honorable Doctor degrees and Gold Medals of YSMU
The solemn session of the Scientific Council took place on February 9 at Yerevan State Medical University after Mkhitar Heratsi. It was marked by the launch of the second conference of the Pediatric Oncology East and Mediterranean Group. Before the launch of the conference, by the decision of the Scientific Council, renowned pediatric oncologist Raya Saab was awarded the title of Honorary Doctor of YSMU.
For the contribution to the treatment of the children’s cancer in Armenia, doctors, Sima Jehan, and Ibrahim Qadumi, were awarded YSMU gold medals of Mkhitar Heratsi.

Pediatric oncologists visited "Megerian Carpet"
Overwhelming doctors from more than 40 countries, who had a great contribution to pediatric oncology, visited the "Megerian Carpet" company. The event was very saturated: a tour of the carpet museum was organized, they got acquainted with the history of the creation of Armenian carpets, witnessed the process of their functioning, and also attended the process of baking traditional Armenian lavash. The guests were welcomed by the First lady of the Republic of Armenia Mrs. Anna Hakobyan, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the “City of Smile” Charity Foundation and Armen Muradyan, YSMU Rector. Samvel Danielyan, director of Hematology Center named after Yolyan, and, participants of the International Children's Oncology Congress that took place in YSMU spoke about the problems of children's oncology, statistics, and development.

The symbol prepared in Armenia from now on will be presented in all countries where POEM conferences will be organized. On the initiative of Pediatric oncologist, hematologist Gevorg Tamamyan, the flag of the of Pediatric Oncology East and Mediterranean Group has been prepared in Yerevan by the second conference of POEM. On the last day of February 10, the flag was solemnly handed to the group leader, and the symbol made in Armenia will now be presented in all countries, where POEM's conferences will be organized:
