History

Has been founded in 2011.
Head of Department: Lida A. Sahakyan, Doctor, Professor of Pedagogical Sciences
Background
The Chemistry Department of Pharmaceutical Faculty has been founded in 1974. The Pharmaceutical and Toxicology Chemistry, as well as Pharmacognosy courses have been included. A big job was done to organize the education process and to form the scientific-pedagogical staff.
The Pharmacognosy course separated from the department in 1980.
All chemistry courses that were in pharmaceutical faculty was united in 1990 (inorganic, organic, physical-colloidal, analytic, pharmaceutical and toxicology).
General and organic chemistry courses of the university college were merged to the department in 1996 and it was formed a multidisciplinary department which has a huge investment in the pharmacists and scientific-pedagogical staff creation in RA.
The research works were provided in 1996 to change the education paradigms and transfer the traditional, adaptive model of education to the developing educational technologies model. The department was headed by the Doctor, Professor of Pedagogical Sciences Lida Sahakyan in 1996-2006.
The department has separated into three departments – analytical, organic and pharmaceutical chemistry. The preparation division has been merged into the Department of Organic Chemistry and Lida A. Sahakyan-Doctor, Professor of Pedagogical Sciences has been appointed as the Head of Department in 2006 and Tamara D. Karapetyan- Candidate of Biological Sciences, Associate Professor has been appointed as the Head of Analytical Chemistry Department, who is the author of 28 scientific works.
The Analytical Chemistry Department merged into the Organic Chemistry Department in 2011. The new department was called the Chemistry Department of Pharmaceutical Faculty and the head was Lida Sahakyan.

Training

Training is organized for the Premedical and 1-st and 2-nd year Pharmaceutical Faculty students. First year students of Pharmaceutical Faculty study: General Chemistry in first semester and Organic Chemistry in second semester. The second year students of Pharmaceutical Faculty study “Chemistry of Heterocyclic compounds” and “Organic synthesis”, “Physical chemistry”, “Analytical chemistry (Qualitative Analysis)” during the first semester and “Colloidal chemistry”, “Analytical chemistry (Quantitative Analysis)” during the second semester.
The thematic materials, which are involved in the program, are taught in lectures and practical works.
The lectures within the framework are carried out with the help of “Power Point” program.
During the lessons the ,,Evristic and problematic,, teaching methods are used. During the practical works the lectures are discussed by the intellectual games, using the problems, crosswords, which help students to develop their logical mindset. Beside the practical works, the students do the individual laboratory works. Each material finishes by the current test. The evaluation is done according to the University’s rule. There is a “Chemistry” course that includes branches (general, inorganic and organic) in Armenian, Russian and English languages are taught in the Preparation Faculty of the YSMU. There are organized technological animation slide shows for the better understanding of the material.
During the last years the staff of the department has established the following manuals:

  • “Inorganic Chemistry. General Chemistry”, Yerevan, 2005, 2015
  • “Organic Chemistry: Heterocyclic chemistry”, Yerevan, 2009, 2015
  • “General and Organic Chemistry” Yerevan, 2010, (English), 2014
  • “Colloidal Chemistry’ Yerevan, 2008,
  • “Qualitative Analysis (anions)” Yerevan, 2008, 2017,
  • “Analytical chemistry (Quantitative Analysis)” Yerevan, 2009
  • “The manual of the laboratory works of the Physical Chemsitry for the Pharmaceutical Faculty students”, Yerevan, 2008, (Russian)

Research works

The following works were done and now are carried out at the department:

  • Synthesis the water-solving, cationic mezzo-tetra-3,4-piridil-arilporphyrins and metalporphyrins and studying the antibacterial, anticancerogen activity

  • “Study of Antioxidant and Antibacterial Activities of the Extracts of Apricot Leaves and Fruit affected of Various Factors; and Investigation of the Possibilities of Application the leaves in RA”.
  • “Synthesis the new type of applied significance copolymers of acrylic acid and acrylamide and investigation of properties”
The doctoral and candidate theses were defended in the department in the following topics:
  • Didactical system of formation of the individual positive attitude of students towards the “Chemistry” subject, Yerevan, 2004,
  • “ The organization features of environmental education at the university- during the teaching process of chemistry”, Yerevan, 2005
  • “Receiving the natural and synthetic origin porphyrins and study the anticancerogen, antibacterial activity”, Yerevan, 2007.
PhD thesis defense by the following topic are in plans in this year program:
  • Synthesis the new cationic amphyphyl mezzo-tetra-pirydil-aril porphyrins, diporphyrins and metalporphyrins
  • Study the anticancerogen, antibacterial activities of the synthesized compounds in vitro and in vivo
  • Development of the Department topic
