Department of Neonatology

General description of the department

The Department of Neonatology for the first time in Armenia was established in 1997 at the National Institute of Health of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Armenia.

From 1997 to 2011 The department was headed by Candidate of Medical Sciences, Associate Professor Emma K. Ainajyan. Over the years, the department has made a great contribution to the training of neonatologists for work in medical institutions in Armenia.

Since 2011, the department has been working as part of the center for professional and continuing education of the Yerevan State Medical University after. Mkhitar Heratsi. In the same year, the department was headed by Professor Pavel A. Mazmanyan. Since the foundation of the department, its main mission has been the postgraduate training of clinical residents in the specialty of neonatology, as well as the implementation of advanced training programs for neonatologists and neonatal nurses. Graduates who have completed clinical residency at the department successfully work in various clinics in Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh.

Education

The department is engaged in postgraduate education and continuing medical education of doctors and nurses. Its main task is to train qualified medical personnel for maternity hospitals, neonatal intensive care units and neonatal special care units in our country. The training of the department is focused on the practical needs of neonatology, aimed at the formation of a doctor’s clinical thinking, from basic medical knowledge to confident mastering of practical skills for assessing the condition, nursing, preventing and treating diseases in newborns of various gestational age, to the conscious introduction of new technologies and methods of treatment in the clinical practice.

In the process of teaching, both traditional and modern types of teaching are used using the Internet and distance learning methods. Particular attention is paid to the training of clinical residents. The curriculum of clinical residents complies with international requirements for training in the specialty “neonatology”. Within the framework of the program of continuous medical education, doctors from all marzes and cities of the Republic of Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh undergo advanced training at the department. In addition to the traditional seven-week certification course for neonatologists and a five-week certification course for nurses, the department has created and conducts special advanced training courses for doctors, such as “Basics of brain ultrasound in newborns”, “Lung ultrasound in neonatologist practice” and “Basics of neonatal respiratory therapy”. The course of resuscitation of a newborn in the delivery room is carried out in a simulation center using modern mannequins and simulators. The modules of the new WHO program “Essentials of newborn care” are widely used in the training process. Education at the department is carried out in close cooperation with the professional societies of neonatologists, such as the “Armenian Association of Neonatal Medicine”, “European Society of Neonatal and Pediatric Intensive Care”.

Research work

The main directions of the research work of the department are the improvement of respiratory therapy of newborns and the study of the outcomes of neurodevelopment of premature newborns. The results of the introduction of new methods of respiratory therapy into practice are presented in the published textbooks “Continuous positive airway pressure in the treatment of respiratory disorders in newborns” and “Non-invasive respiratory therapy in newborns”, as well as in protocols for respiratory support of newborns. For the first time in Armenia, the staff of the department conducted a randomized controlled trial comparing two different methods of nasal CPAP in the treatment of respiratory disorders after birth, which made a significant contribution to the development of neonatal respiratory therapy. This study was conducted in collaboration with the department of neonatal medicine at Imperial College London. Another direction of scientific activity is the study of the mechanisms of high nasal flow therapy in newborns, which is also was a subject of several international publications.

Three clinical bases of the department are members of the international neonatal network “eNewborn”, which is a modern platform for international research and cooperation in neonatology.

At the department, Ph.D. dissertations and scientific research are also being carried out in the field of improving phototherapy for neonatal hyperbilirubinemia and the treatment of respiratory disorders.

The staff of the department is actively involved in the creation of national guidelines and protocols for the care and treatment of newborns and are the authors of numerous publications.

Cooperation

The Department of Neonatology constantly cooperates with the University Perinatal Center in Zurich, the Department of Neonatal Medicine of the Imperial College London, the Scientific Department of “Fisher & Pakel” Auckland, New Zealand. The result of cooperation is joint scientific projects and publications in international specialized journals.
