Propaedeutics of internal diseases

The department was established in June 2016, by restructuring Department of Therapy No.2 with its staff and material base (technical, economic, clinical). It can be considered that the history of the department starts from Department of Therapy No.1 and reaches to the roots of Yerevan State Medical University (YSMU) foundation.

A number of famous specialists worked at the Department of Therapy No.1: Tigran Sergey Mnatsakanov, DMSc (doctor of medical sciences), Professor (1899-1968); Perch Aristakes Vardapetyan, DMSc, Professor (1914-1978); Ayvazyan Artyom Alexander, DMSc, Professor (1924-1993); Rafael Samvel Mamikonyan, DMSc, Professor, Honored Scientist of the Armenian SSR (1927-1995).

The department was headed by Prof. R.S. Mamikonyan (1968-1995), Prof. G.A. Yeganyan, (1995-1997), Prof. E.Ye. Nazaretyan (1997-2008). In 2008-2011 the Department of Therapy No.  1 was headed by Prof. H.S. Sisakyan and the Department of Therapy No.2 by DMSc A.A. Ayvazyan. In 2011-2016 the Department of Therapy No.2 was headed by DMSc Z.T. Jndoyan.

In addition to their educational and academic activities at the university and contribution to the healthcare field of the republic, they have trained a lot of staff members: candidates and doctors of medical sciences.

At the department classes are organized for:

• 3^rd year students of the Faculties of General Medicine, Military Medicine and Stomatology,
• 4^th year local and foreign students of the Faculty of Stomatology,
• 3^rd and 4^th year students of YSMU college.

The department also organizes postgraduate education in “Internal Medicine”, “Gastroenterology” and “Pulmonology” specialties.

The staff of the department has prepared and published a number of textbooks and handouts for the students as well as has composed up-to-date electronic materials and presentations.

For students during the training process are organized examination of patients hospitalized at the department as well as discussions of patients’ clinical cases.

For 3^rd year students of the Faculty of General Medicine practical classes are organized at the Simulation Center of practical skills.

The Department of Therapy of the “Mikayelyan” University Hospital was founded in 2018. The head of the department of therapy is D.C. Professor Zinaida Tital Jndoyan from 2018 since today.

It is the training base of YSMU “Propaedeutics of Internal Diseases”, “Internal Diseases (Pulmonology and Nephrology)” and “Internal Diseases (Rheumatology)” departments for students, clinical residents and trainees. The doctors of the clinic are engaged in scientific activities, undergo regular trainings, participate in seminars and conferences in Armenia and abroad, apply contemporary methods for diagnosing and treating diseases. Clinical residents of the department are actively involved in research and treatment activities carried out at the clinic.

There is an extensive therapeutical consultation service at the clinic of Therapy and there are treated patients with:

• respiratory,
• cardiovascular,
• gastrointestinal,
• hepatobiliary,
• urinary,
• and musculoskeletal
  system disorders.

The scientific programs are implemented in cooperation with the clinical bases of the department, YSMU Central Research Laboratory and a number of departments.

The programs are dedicated to the following topics:

• Development of new methods for early diagnosis, treatment and prevention of Familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) and its complications.
• Development of methods for early diagnosis and treatment of COVID-19 and its complications.
