History

The Faculty of Public Health was established in 2011. In Soviet Armenia the public health services were performed by the graduates of the Faculty of Preventive Medicine, the only faculty in the field of preventive medicine in YSMU. Education was consisted of 6-year basic education and postgraduate specialized residency programs or internship. In 1998 the Faculty of Preventive Medicine, Pediatric and Medical Faculties were merged into the Faculty of General Medicine. Specialists of preventive medicine were trained only through following residency programs: “Social Hygiene and Organization of Health Care”, “Hygiene” and “Epidemiology”.

The Faculty of Public Health was established in 2011. In 1998 the Faculty of Preventive Medicine, Pediatric and Medical Faculties were merged into the Faculty of General Medicine. Specialists of preventive medicine were trained only through following residency programs: “Social Hygiene and Organization of Health Care”, “Hygiene” and “Epidemiology”.

In 2005 master programs were introduced into higher educational establishments of RA including YSMU as a result of Bologna process in higher education system.

At the moment of establishment the Faculty of Public Health had only one master program - “Health Care Organization and Management”. Residency program in “Social Hygiene and Organization of Health Care” was converted into master program. Following international format in public health education in 2016 residency programs in “Hygiene” and “Epidemiology” were also reorganized into corresponding master programs. Along with format change the content of educational programs has also been changed to comply with the standards of contemporary international master programs in public health.

In 2017 the Faculty of Public Health lunched new Executive MBA Program with minor in Health Care Management.

Education

The Master’s Degree Programs of Public Health Faculty provide deep and comprehensive knowledge in different areas of public health.

It applies an integrated approach to strengthen population health and prevent diseases through identifying, assessment and analysis of healthcare problems, as well as managed response, also developing, implementing and evaluating health programs based on assessment of the health needs and risk factors of different groups of population. Moreover, the program provides methodological concepts to improve capabilities and potential of healthcare system based on the analysis and assessment of the effectiveness of health services and health system performance. 

The Master Programs of Public Health Faculty are based on the recommendations set out by Association of Schools of Public Health (ASPH) for Public Health Master Programs.

 The Faculty of Public Health has two different degree programs: Master of Public Health (MPH) and Master of Business Administration (Executive MBA).

Master of Public Health Program has different concentration fields:

  • Health Care Organization and Management
  • Epidemiology
  • Environmental Health

Master of Business Administration (Executive MBA) with minor in:

  • Health Care Management

 Health Care Organization and Management” Master Program provides basic knowledge and skills regarding the effective management and administration of health care system, health services and medical facilities in the Republic of Armenia and other countries. The program interdisciplinary approach develops the skills and abilities essential for effective work management, human resource management and effective communication to professional audiences, leadership as well as health policy development. Program provides the intensive knowledge to identify, assess and address the problems of the healthcare system, as well as skills to develop, implement and evaluate health care programs for the maintenance and improvement of the individual and population health based on the understanding complex determinants of health and analysis of population health indicators. Curriculum

 “Epidemiology” Master Program provides basic knowledge regarding the etiology, pathogenesis, risk factors, preventive and anti-epidemic measures for infectious and non-infectious diseases, hospital infections, as well as immunization issues. It also develops skills for epidemiological investigation and data analysis. The program provides a thorough grounding in epidemiological surveillance targeted at prevention and control of infectious and non-communicable diseases, chemical poisonings and radiation contamination.

The program is based on contemporary principles and approaches of European and American “epidemiology schools”. Curriculum

 “Environmental Health” Master Program provides basic knowledge regarding the natural, social and anthropogenic factors of the environment, the beneficial and harmful impact of environmental factors on human health, cause-and-effect relationship, as well as the principles of investigation, assessment and setting permissible concentrations of harmful substances. The program develops the skills to perform hygienic analysis as well as risk assessment of various environmental objects and factors. Provided knowledge and skills create a thorough grounding for maintenance and strengthening the population health. Curriculum

 Duration of MPH Programs is 18 months. MPH Programs are culminated with Master Thesis Project that integrates essential public health knowledge, skills, and methods in a professionally and personally relevant practice context. MPH program provides overall 90 credits, 60 credits per year.

The first part of the curriculum provides exposure to the core public health disciplines. The second part of the program consists of disciplines specific to the chosen concentration.

Course evaluation is based on the multicomponent grading system:

  • Test
  • Research paper
  • Research Presentation (Power Point Presentation)
  • Group work
  • Critic writing

The education is full-time, all weekdays, from 9:00 to 13:00 p.m.

 

Academic staff

The academic staff of Public Health Faculty consists of YSMU professors and visiting lecturers, who have relevant education and significant experience in various fields of public health.

Visiting lecturers are invited from RA Ministry of Health, Center for Disease Control and Prevention, international organizations: Global Fund, WHO, Red Cross, World Vision, UNICEF, UNAIDS, Peace Core, Oxfam, FMD K&L Europe etc.

 

MPH Learning outcomes:

  1. Apply the basic public health knowledge to develop health policy and to solve public health problems using the principles of epidemiology, biostatistics, environmental and occupational health, health management, social and behavioral science, guided by scientific and research ethics principles.
  2. Identify the main health problems facing the country, the causes of these problems and the sources of information, as well as provide possible solutions, develop and evaluate strategic approaches to assess economic, political, administrative, legal and social consequences.
  3. Properly obtain, analyze and evaluate the health data, which are accessible through information technologies and other means.   
  4. Properly design, implement and evaluate health care and preventive programs and activities, as well as to plan and submit a competitive proposal.
  5. Apply an appropriate project design, quantitative and qualitative research methods to analyze health policies and to efficiently evaluate health care and preventive programs, to properly use data to identify and address public health problems, as well as to assess integrity and comparability of research data.
  6. Assess the quality of research data and evaluate its applicability to health care system.
  7. Analyze and evaluate the health status of population and demographic data by morbidity, disease prevalence, structure, as well as mortality and life span indicators.
  8. Analyze and evaluate financing and structure of health care system and facilities.
  1. Demonstrate leadership and decision making skills adhering to the principles of ethics and professionalism in public health. Apply the principles of health care management and administration, systematic approach to arrange implementation of health care programs and effective functioning of health care facilities.
  2. Effectively develop, analyze and evaluate health care strategy to improve the health indicators of population and address public health issues.

 

Applicants

The graduates of medical and non-medical universities can apply to the Master Programs of Public Health Faculty. The graduates of non-medical universities can apply to MPH program with concentration in Health Care Organization and Management as well as to the MBA Program with minor in Health Care Management. Admission requires participation in interview and submission of relevant documents.

Executive MBA Program with minor in Health Care Management

The Executive MBA Program is implemented with “Management Mix” international consulting company with more than 15 years of experience in various fields of management.  Intensive 1-year program provides participants:

  • Strong foundation of business knowledge, skills and attitudes to support ethical, global business management of organizations;
  • Sharing management experience with the directors and CEOs of leading medical and non-medical facilities in the Republic of Armenia;
  • Comprehensive knowledge regarding international standards and models of management in medical and non-medical facilities;
  • Skills and capabilities to identify, research, analyze and effectively address the complex issues of health sector facilities and other enterprises;

 Duration of Executive MBA Program is 1 academic year and it is culminated with Master Thesis Project that integrates essential business administration knowledge, skills, and methods in a professionally and personally relevant practice context. The Program provides 60 credits.

 The Program consists of core courses, main courses, business project development, field practicum and master thesis project. Curriculum

Core courses focused on contemporary management principles and models, effective process management at different levels of the company, leadership, human resource management, marketing, financial management and systematic approach to effectively arrange organization performance. Expert training is an important part of the courses.

Main courses are distinctive for participants with medical and non-medical background. Main courses for participants with medical background include modules in health care management and administration, health law, health insurance, etc. Main courses for participants with non-medical background consist of modules in business management, administration, and advanced managerial skills in the fields other than health care. 

Business project development module provides practical knowledge and skills on contemporary principles of business project and implementation, as well as expertise in competitive business project design and presentation skills.

During field practicum participants visit medical and non-medical facilities and learn about functions, structure and management process of different enterprises, companies, meet CEOs and directors, etc.

  • Comparative analysis

Classes are conducted twice per week: Friday and Saturday, from 14:30 till 20:30.
