The Department of Military Field Therapy

History

The Department of Military Field Therapy was established in 1998 by the order of the Minister of Defense of the Republic of Armenia and separated from the General Department of Military Field Surgery, Military Maxillofacial Surgery and Military Field Therapy of the Military Medical Faculty of YSMU.

The head of the newly created department of field therapy was appointed Dr.Sc., military colonel S. Galstyan.

The contribution to the formation and implementation of the educational process of the department was made by the first lecturers of the department – PhD, associate professor, lieutenant colonel m/s N. Arzumanyan, PhD, associate professor, major m/s A. Danielyan and PhD, associate professor, major m/s K. Sahakyan.

In 2002, by order of the Minister of Defense of the Republic of Armenia, specialized clinics were established at the Central Clinical Military Hospital of the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Armenia. S. Galstyan was appointed head of the therapeutic clinic of the Central Clinical Military Hospital of the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Armenia.

In 2007, a course of clinical toxicology was created at the department on the basis of the Pediatric Toxicology Center of the Muratsan Hospital Complex.

Since 2012, the head of the department was colonel m/s, Dr.Sc, associate professor V. Tsaturyan.

In 2015, by the order of the Minister of Defense of the Republic of Armenia, a course of military toxicology was included in the department of Military Field Therapy with the participation of the senior lecturer, major L. Hovhannisyan and lecturer R. Khachikyan.

Since 2020, the course of “Aviation Medicine” was implemented for cadets.

Learning

Currently, the department provide teaching courses of military field therapy, military polyclinic, therapeutic assistance in emergency situations (for foreign students), military toxicology, clinical toxicology, aviation medicine.

The courses are held in three languages ​​to students of the Faculty of General Medicine, cadets of the Military Medical Faculty, foreign students, students of the YSMU Medical College.

The department is actively involved in the system of postgraduate education in the preparation of interns and clinical residents.

Russian-language textbooks of battlefield therapy, as well as Armenian educational materials translated and processed from the latter in the form of lectures and separate parts, educational manuals developed in the department (“Clinical toxicology”, “Radiation damage”, “Internal medicine in emergency situations”) and etc.

Work is being done on the development of a new Armenian textbook of military field therapy, two training manuals on aviation medicine are being prepared for publication.

Scientific research

The scientific research of the department includes the investigation of pathogenesis, clinical course, treatment and prevention of internal diseases in military personnel and the wounded, the influence of high-altitude conditions on the human body, chronic microwave pathologies, exposure to heavy metals, aspects of military medical expertise, military and clinical toxicology, organization of emergency therapeutic help.

The department has a great and special contribution to the organization of therapeutic assistance in the Armed Forces of the Republic of Armenia, the process of prevention and treatment of reactive arthritis, glomerulonephritis, neurocirculatory asthenia, pneumonia in military personnel, as well as the development of guidelines for these pathologies.

The department plays a special role in the prevention of infectious diseases, tuberculosis, the organization of medical support for military personnel in high-altitude conditions, in the study of occupational diseases, as well as the development of documents regulating military medical expertise in the RA Armed Forces.

The staff of the department published many articles, monographs, manuals.

Candidate’s and doctoral dissertations are defended at the department.

Clinical activity of the department

The teaching staff of the chair is widely involved in the clinical work of the therapeutic clinic of the Central Clinical Military Hospital and other medical institutions. The teaching staff actively participates in general visits, management of inpatients, outpatient admissions according to narrow specialties, professors of the chair occupy key positions in the Central Clinical Military Hospital, “Muratsan” University Medical Complex and other medical institutions (leading therapist, head of the therapeutic department, children’s resuscitation and toxicology clinic manager etc.).
