“Remove clothing from the victim’s chest”: this is one of several defibrillator instructions in Armenian. First aid courses, BLS (Basic Life Support), are continuing through the joint efforts of Yerevan State Medical University, specifically the Department of Emergency Care and Disaster Medicine, and the \u201cHenar\u201d Foundation, which launched the Armenian-language defibrillator.<\/p>\n
Program Director, anesthesiologist Armen Hovhannisyan, explains that there are no barriers to using the defibrillator in English and Russian among students and residents. However, given its applicability to other professions, such as service workers, there is a need to introduce an Armenian version of first aid equipment for life-threatening situations.<\/p>\n
“We noticed that many people do not understand either English or Russian instructions. In a mannequin simulation, if instructions are not followed properly, their effective application in real-life situations to a victim can become even more impossible. Providing first aid to a victim is stressful, and it’s unacceptable to follow instructions incorrectly or not understand them. We concluded that it was essential to ensure the availability of defibrillators in Armenian in our country, both for educational purposes and for real-world use. Associate Professor Ara Ghazaryan, Head of the Department of Emergency Care and Disaster Medicine; and I contacted various organizations involved in importing defibrillators to Armenia. However, there was little interest, and the process lacked commercial appeal. Therefore, we took the initiative and began implementing the product ourselves. As a result, an organization in China agreed to support us”, Hovhannisyan noted. According to him, the instructors developed the package in Armenian, and anesthesiologist Vladimir Harutyunyan wrote down the instructions. “Thus, the first Armenian defibrillator was created that ‘speaks’ in the voice of a doctor-lecturer. Another important factor is that the instructions played through the defibrillator are delivered by a specialist, not a translator. These are clear and concise instructions, carried out by volunteers. Today, both training and real defibrillators operating in our native language are already available in Armenia. \u201cThe availability of such devices is especially important in public places: cafes, on the streets, and other crowded places,” he emphasized.<\/p>\n
According to Armen Hovhannisyan, the main goal of providing first aid outside of a hospital is to enable everyone to quickly respond and save a life. The localization and adaptation of life-saving equipment in our country is an important and priority process. The program includes 2.5-hour training courses in groups of 15-20 people.<\/p>\n
Participants spend approximately an hour of this time practicing with their hands.<\/p>\n
The course is designed so that participants become practically automatic in using the defibrillator. “We have now established a training center, and since October 2025, we have trained over 700 participants\u2014students, volunteers, doctors, and nurses\u2014in basic resuscitation skills.<\/p>\n
The course lasts 2.5 hours for volunteers and up to 6 hours for medical workers, ensuring a more thorough and complete understanding of the material”, Armen Hovhannisyan emphasized.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
