YSMU Rector and the UAE Ambassador to Armenia discussed the prospects of expanding collaboration

Armen Muradyan, Rector of Yerevan State Medical University named after Mkhitar Heratsi, hosted H.E. Nariman Mohammed Sharif Abdullah Al Mulla, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to the Republic of Armenia.

Welcoming the high-ranking diplomat, the head of the university noted that the Ambassador was an expected guest at the medical university. “I represent a university that has a history of 100 years. It is a pleasure that you were hosted here these days, when our university was internationally accredited. Of course, such meetings with representatives of our partner countries are very important for us. Unfortunately, we do not have students from your country. However, we work with certain residents, and being aware of the successes in the healthcare sector of your country, we have a great desire to cooperate in the medical, scientific, and educational fields,” Armen Muradyan emphasized, expressing his willingness to organize visits to university clinical institutions.

Ambassador Nariman Mohammed Sharif Abdullah Al Mulla congratulated the head of the university on the international accreditation. “This place is special for me, because I am a doctor myself, a cardiologist, I know very well what it means to be a student at a medical university”, she said.

The diplomat noted that she discussed the issue of the involvement of students from the UAE in YSMU with the education officials of her country, representatives of the relevant departments and medical schools. “They expressed their willingness to cooperate, and one of the questions was whether the university is internationally recognized. Now I actually got the answer to that question,” she happily noted.

The Ambassador was interested in the language of teaching at the university.

“In general, teaching at the medical university is carried out in three languages: Armenian, Russian and English. The “MD Physician” educational program was also separately accredited in English. For more than 2000 students from 35 countries, the educational program is the same: it necessarily includes teaching the Armenian language. There are 3,800 institutions providing the “MD Physician” profession in the world, and only 400 are internationally accredited. In addition to accreditation, our university also participates in the rating process. I am sure that by the end of the year we will also know where we are, apart from the accreditation,” Armen Muradyan said.

The UAE Ambassador was particularly interested in the activities of the Faculty of Military Medicine, noting that this field was the least represented in her country.

Yervand Sahakyan, Vice-Rector for International Activities and External Relations, and Vardan Tsaturyan, Head of the Faculty of Military Medicine, presented the details of the educational process and its duration, including for foreign students.

The interlocutors also discussed the use of artificial intelligence in the educational programs of the university.

At the suggestion of the Rector, the Ambassador made a tour of the “COBRAIN” research center of YSMU.

At the end of the meeting, a mutual agreement was reached to expand cooperation in the specified areas.
