March 21 is the World Down Syndrome Day

Down Syndrome is a disorder that occurs when there is a duplication of the twenty-first chromosome․ So, on March 21 – a date chosen to represent the chromosomal defection found in Down Syndrome (the twenty-first day of the third month) – World Down Syndrome Day is celebrated, an event created to raise public awareness, promote inclusivity, encourage advocacy, and support the wellbeing of those living with Down Syndrome.

The wider theme of this year's event will be “We Decide”: inspired by the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, this will focus on the right of participation for those living with Down's Syndrome.

The life expectancy of people with Down syndrome has risen sharply in recent years to 60 years.
