Mohammad Sahil Khan is the 5th course student of the Faculty of General Medicine of Yerevan State Medical University after Mkhitar Heratsi.

25-year-old future gastroenterologist, in addition to medical education, also has many hobbies: he likes to sing and play cricket.

“Time flies, it feels like only yesterday I had come to Yerevan from my birthplace Motihari, a district in Bihar. From being a fresher to now being in the Student Parliament for last 3 years; I feel I’ve grown up a lot”, he jokes.

Mohammad became interested in medicine, witnessing the tireless work of his father, Professor Shakil Ahmad Khan, in the field of zoology. “I became interested in zoology at an early age, and then I found myself in medicine. The human body fascinates me, and the fact that being such a marvelous creation it hasn’t become invulnerable still makes me want to give my all in and become the best in my field so that I could help people and improve lives”, he tells.

The student learned about the medical university from his compatriot, YSMU graduate Doctor Mohsin Hashmi. “I feel the zeal with which our professors at YSMU teach us. The attention paid to each student provides us with an education that encourages us to invest the best and learn the most,” he assures.

Mohammad admires Armenia and the hospitality of the Armenian people. “It is so motivating to live and study in a country where people care about each other. It makes you feel at home in Armenia,” he says frankly.

From Mohammad’s point of view, the path to becoming a doctor is full of challenges.

A few years later he sees himself as a surgeon in gastroenterology. He plans to continue higher education eyeing on the post-graduate programs which are offered at YSMU.

“Learning from the best surgeons and hard-working doctors on a day to day basis gives us a hands-on experience to deal with the patients”, Mohammad emphasizes.

After gaining practical skills in Armenia, he will return to his homeland to apply his knowledge effectively.

“I think that a doctor should strive to be wise, sensitive, trustworthy, compassionate, communicative and energetic towards his own work,” the student concludes, quoting the words of the famous Spanish psychiatrist Felix Marti-Ibanez: “To be a doctor means much more than to dispense pills or to patch up or repair torn flesh and shattered minds. To be a doctor is to be an intermediary between man and God”.
