A debate competition was held at YSMU

The first session of the International Medical/Ethical competition was successfully conducted by the YSMU Faculty Council of International Students in collaboration with the Debate club of the university’s Students’ Parliament.

The event comprised of 2 debated between 4 teams. The participants of all the teams were randomly selected and segregated based on equal distribution in order to have teams with equal strengths.

The adjudicators for the event were: Gayane Avetisyan, Dean of International students; Aram Baykov, Head of Department of Academic Affairs and Pharmacology; Artem Grigoryan, Head of Department of pathophysiology, Rahul Anil Sethi, Head of Department of International Cooperation; and Vahagn Petrosyan, President of International Affairs Department of YSMU Students’ Parliament.

The topics for the debate were given to the teams exactly 24 hours before the debate competition. The first debate was on the topic “Should there be criminal offence for medical errors?” to which Teams 1 & 2 presented their arguments in a strategic and structured manner. The second debate started between Teams 5 & 6 on the topic “Is Botox more harmful than useful?”. Both teams were very convincing in their arguments.

The judges really appreciated the hard work and research put in by all the participants.

The winners of the debates were Team 2 and Team 5 respectively who will be moving on to the semifinals.

The event was concluded by appreciation speeches by all the adjudicators who commended the efforts of the Organizing Committee and Students’ Parliament. The judges also inspired the young minds by sharing their personal and professional advice.

The next session of the debate competition will be held on December 3, 2021 between Teams 3 & 4, and Teams 7 & 8.
