Knowledge, care, and selflessness unite in the protection of human life: Analytical

The figure of the Armenian physician spans the entire continuum of our people’s history—from medieval monastery healers and folk doctors to today’s forefront of urologists, cardiologists, surgeons, pediatricians, war doctors, and other narrow specialists. Your present-day role continues the tradition formed from Narekatsi’s A Voice for God through the Soviet-era Armenian medical-academic school and now the medical academy of the Republic of Armenia. According to statistical data from the Analytical Subdivision of the University Hospital, the Armenian people have been and remain resilient and united thanks to their physicians. As of 2023, the total number of doctors and allied medical staff in the Republic of Armenia is 30,073, of whom 13,943 are physicians across all specialties (including dental specialists)—approximately 46.6 physicians per 10,000 population. This exceeds the global average, reflecting both the dedication of specialists and the latent strength of the system. During the most challenging phases of the pandemic in 2020–2021, Armenian physicians worked beyond all boundaries; the healthcare sector stood at the forefront of the nation, defending what is most precious—life. Dear specialists—cardiologists, oncologists, surgeons, neurologists, anesthesiologists, gynecologists, pediatricians, intensivists, radiologists, laboratory workers, and all branches of medicine: on the occasion of Medical Worker’s Day, we express our deepest gratitude to you for the vast and silent work you perform every day at the borders of life and death. Medical workers receive congratulations and words of appreciation not only from doctors but from all who protect health daily: nurses, laboratory staff, paramedics, pharmacists, ambulance drivers, technical staff of medical institutions, as well as university professors and students.

Cardiologists. Cardiac care in Armenia has traveled a long road—from specialized cardiac centers during the Soviet period to today’s minimally invasive interventions. As of 2023, there are 594 cardiologists practicing in the Republic. In 2024, cardiovascular disease remained the leading cause of death in Armenia, accounting for approximately 47% of total mortality. If not for the tireless work of experienced specialists, this figure would have been far greater. Thank you for the courageous work by which thousands of lives are saved each year—your hands hold the heartbeat.

Neurologists and neurosurgeons stand where pain becomes silence and speech becomes healing. In the past decade, the prevalence of neurological disease in Armenia has increased—especially among the elderly—fueling both demand and commitment among specialists. As of 2023, 344 neurologists are practicing in Armenia. Thank you for supporting humanity’s “battlefields against the unseen”—from migraine to stroke.

Oncologists and hematologists fight the most formidable disease. That fight transcends medication or radiation; it includes hope, endurance, and psychological courage. Some 8,000 new cancer cases are registered in Armenia annually. Beyond treating the body, these specialists bring hope where voices falter. In 2023, Armenia counted 131 practicing oncologists.

Surgeons, anesthesiologists, and intensivists embody professional precision, scientific flexibility, and psychological resilience. Across Armenia, about 400 surgeons are active (2023 data), and anesthesiologists stand daily at the boundaries of life with attentive, often unacknowledged vigilance. Your silence is sometimes the deepest shield for a patient’s life. As of 2023, surgical professionals numbered 2,303.

Pediatricians and neonatologists are the first to hold the newborn’s hand. Due to improvements in neonatal intensive care and regional services, infant mortality in Armenia continues to decline. Currently, 1,216 pediatric specialists serve nationwide. A child lives because of you.

Radiologists, laboratory technicians, morphologists, and imaging specialists may not speak with the patient, but see what the patient cannot. Since 2018, Armenia has witnessed soaring advancements in diagnostic laboratories. About 70% of decisions based on diagnostic research stem from precise lab and imaging interpretations—your gaze sees beyond appearances. As of 2023, there are 1,378 specialists in these fields.

Pediatric gynecologists and reproductive health specialists preserve the very origin of life—the spectrum of safe delivery and motherhood. In 2024, Armenia saw 33,648 births, most of which were attended by skilled specialists. The growth of the nation and family depends on you—literally. As of 2023, pediatric gynecology specialists numbered 851. Behind every newborn is your conscientious attention.

Preventive medicine and public health specialists aim to foretell, analyze, and manage health challenges at a societal level like never before. According to WHO data, up to 70% of factors impacting population health derive not from clinical medicine but from public health interventions. Today’s greatest challenges—pandemics, the spread of noncommunicable diseases, promoting healthy lifestyles, environmental risks—lie in your domain. By devising health policy, supervising epidemic responses, and educating society, you serve not just the sick but the entire nation’s health. Public health is the field where prevention is the greatest victory. In 2023, there were 316 public health and epidemiology experts.

Primary care physicians, the bedrock of healthcare: in 2023, their number within the Primary Healthcare System was 5,561—standing at the forefront of preserving and promoting human health, preventing and treating diseases. Allied health professionals also play a crucial role in ensuring quality care. In 2023, Armenia had 16,130 allied health employees, which equates to 53.9 per 10,000 population—below the average of 36 member countries in the Commonwealth of Independent States, where the average is 88.

The Armenian physician—whether surgeon, gynecologist, radiologist, or neurologist—is long more than a specialist: he carries society’s conscience. Every narrow specialty you embody is a stone in the temple of our health. Today, the physician stands not only as a healer, but also as a scientist, teacher, and carrier of humanity. Your mastery and ethical duty together have become the cornerstones of societal trust.

The statistics speak for themselves: nearly 14,000 senior medical workers in Armenia; thousands of life-saving interventions; increased research, improved medical education, and expanded international collaboration. Many of you are YSMU alumni, professors, or professional colleagues. Your dedication is also a guiding example for the new generation striving to continue this exalted and established tradition.

“Heratsi” Analytica congratulates our physicians on Medical Worker’s Day. Your specialty is one of the rare arenas where knowledge, care, and self-awareness unite to protect human life under all circumstances and at all times.
