In the history of the 100-year-old medical university, March 16 was marked by the opening of the “COBRAIN” Scientific-Educational Center for Fundamental Brain Research.
Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, Chief of Staff of the Prime Minister Arayik Harutyunyan, Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sports Vahram Dumanyan, Minister of Health Anahit Avanesyan, representatives of diplomatic and international structures, representatives of YSMU teaching staff were present at the ceremony.
In accordance with international standards, the research and educational center can become a platform for excellence in the development of basic science, competitive with the best laboratories in Europe.
Presenting the history of the establishment of this important scientific-educational structure, YSMU Vice-Rector for Science Konstantin Yenkoyan noted that the university team led by the Rector had adopted the path of science development with the support of the RA Government, the World Bank and the EU Horizon 2020 program.
According to him, the vision of the big university team is to have a regional center of Neuroscience and Brain Research in Armenia, which will place the country on the world scientific map.
Carolin Geginat, Head of the World Bank's Office in Yerevan, said that the new center would give a new impetus to brain research.
“As a result, the structure will be a center of excellence, similar to laboratories in European countries, as it will enable students to engage in scientific research”, said Carolin Geginat, noting the ongoing collaborative scientific environment between national and international research centers.
Addressing the guests, present at the event, YSMU Rector Armen Muradyan noted that the day was very important, as the opening of the center marked the beginning of a new stage of development of the university.
“Not only the educational process is a priority for us, but we are also diversifying our efforts taking into consideration the fact that for years the medical university has stood out not only among the republic, but also among the world universities due to science,” Armen Muradyan stressed, adding that the efforts were aimed at the creation of a modern scientific platform that will help students discover their opportunities.
