The management

The management of “Yerevan State Medical University after Mkhitar Heratsi” Foundation (YSMU) operates in accordance with the legislation of the Republic of Armenia and the university’s statute, following the principles of self-governance that combine both sole management and collegiality.

The university’s management is structured through including the Board of Trustees, the Rector, the Academic Council, and the Rectorate. The Board of Trustees, serving a 5-year term, plays a pivotal role as a collegial governing body and comprises 32 members. This body is composed of representatives from the university’s faculty, students, the founder, and the authorized body. The council elects a chairman from among its members, excluding the student representatives.

The council develops and approves regulations for the election of the Rector. Additionally, organizes the Rector’s election in accordance with these regulations and implements authority defined by both the law and the university charter.

The university’s Scientific Council is a governing body chaired by the Rector, tasked with coordinating and regulating educational, scientific, and scientific-technical activities. This council consists of 80 members, including student representatives who constitute a minimum of 25 percent of the total membership. The Scientific Council convenes sessions at least once a month.

The Rector governs the university, who establishes a consultative body known as the rectorate. The primary educational entities within the university are its faculties. Each faculty serves as an autonomous educational unit, organized based on professional disciplines or the nature of its activities. The fundamental educational components of the university include departments and educational groups.

The following faculties operate in YSMU:

  • General Medicine
  • Stomatology
  • Pharmacy
  • Military Medicine
  • Public Health
  • Postgraduate and Continuing Education

Each faculty is managed by its respective faculty council and Dean. It’s worth noting that at least 25 percent of the faculty council’s members are students.

Participation of lecturers and students related to them decision-making, first of all, is ensured in all university management bodies: in the board of trustees of the university (25 percent each of professors and students), in the scientific council of the university (25 percent of students, more than 50 percent of professors), in faculty councils (25 percent of students, 75 percent professors) with their representation. Students are also represented in university and subject curricular councils. The president of the student parliament is a member of the academic council and the rectorate.

The student parliament serves as the governing body responsible for protecting the   rights of students and coordinating student-related events.

The meetings of both university and faculty councils are accessible to professors and students, providing a platform for them to participate and share their perspectives on relevant issues. The university’s administration consistently holds meetings with students and teaching staff, listens to their opinions and suggestions, all of which are taken into account in decision-making. Professors and students also have the opportunity to express their views in the university journal as well as “Future Doctor” periodical.
