Department of cardiology

History

The post graduate department of cardiology of YSMU was founded in 2011. During 2011-2018 the head of the department was academician K.G. Adamyan.  Since 2018 the head of department is professor, DSc H.G. Hayrapetyan. H.G. Hayrapetyan is an honored fellow of European Society of Cardiology /FESC/,  member of  numerous prestigious editorial groups and councils, Chief of Cardiology Center at Erebouni medical center, Chief cardiologist of the  Ministry of Healthcare of the Republic of Armenia, the president of Armenian Cardiologists Association(since 2021).

The department has two clinical bases: Erebouni and Yerevan medical centers, with the following sub departments: urgent cardiology department-intensive care unit, arrythmology and interventional cardiology departments. The hospitals are saturated with contemporary diagnostic opportunities to diagnose cardiovascular diseases, which include laboratory and imaging methods. Patients with acute and chronic ischemic disease, arterial hypertension, acute and chronic heart failure, arrhythmias, non-ischemic heart diseases are treated in an aforementioned departments. Cardiovascular invasive operations are performed in here: coronary angiography, central and peripheral vascular angiography, percutaneous coronary intervention, stenting and balloon dilation of pulmonary artery and its branches, invasive aortic valve replacement, chemoembolization of inner organs /liver, uterus, prostate/, the full spectrum of invasive arryhtmology procedures.

Teaching

The department is famous of its contemporary diagnostic, therapeutical and preventive methods and of the implementation of the newest  educational programs in and outside of Armenia. The teaching is provided not only with lectures and practical lessons, but also with the use of modern tools, such as online seminars/Zoom/ and video lectures on youtube.

The duration of clinical residency of a specialty “cardiologist” is 3 years. Three year program of specialization of cardiologists and the professional certification plans for doctors and nurses have been established.  In the study plan of specialization and improvement the following are included: generally used diagnostic methods in cardiology (electrocardiogram, echocardiography, Holter monitor, exercise and pharmacological stress tests, invasive methods), pathophysiology of cardiovascular diseases and the clinical pharmacology in the treatment of the patients with cardiovascular diseases.

In the department postgraduate specialazation of the following spheres are being organized: interventional cardiology, intensive cardiac care, invasive arrythmology, echocardiography.

The department successfully organizes educational programs in the provinces of RA, creates educational textbooks, translates and adapts international guidelines.
