History
The department of Endocrinology was founded in 1980 in Yerevan Medical Institute and headed by Perch Aristakesyan. Later it became a course in the Department of Internal Medicine of YSMU then reopened in 2004 and headed by Eliza Hayrapetyan.
In 2008 on the base of Pediatric Endocrinology Clinic of Muratsan University Hospital was founded the General Endocrinology Clinic, which became a clinical base for the Department of Endocrinology. The clinic and the department are now headed by Yelena Aghajanova MD, PhD, Professor.
Education
Teaching at the department is conducted in the faculties of General Medicine and Military Medicine in the form of lectures (10 hours) and practical classes (25 hours). Educational process includes the usage of various didactic materials (slides, educational videos).
Numerous textbooks and manuals have been published in Armenian, Russian and English by the teaching staff of the department, among them: «Diabetes mellitus», «Diseases of Thyroid gland», «Diseases of the hypothalamic-pituitary system», «Diseases of adrenal glands», as well as handouts for clinical residents.
Postgraduate education
Postgraduate education includes Clinical Residency with the duration of 2 years.
Research projects
Research projects of the department are conducted in the following areas:
- Diabetes Mellitus type 1 in children and adolescents, prevalence and features of the complications
- The protective effect of embrional proteoglycans on the insular apparatus of pancreas
- Causes and prevalence of osteoporosis in different regions of Armenia. Osteoporosis in postmenopausal women
- Specificity and prevalence of short stature in Armenia
- Conventional pathogens of intestinal microflora and arginase activity in leukocytes in type 1 diabetes mellitus patients
- Bone metabolism features in patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus
- Diagnosis and treatment perspectives of disorders of sexual differentiation
