History
The Faculty of Military Surgery, as a part of YSMU, is set up in May19 of 1994 according to the edict Ministry of Defence. It’s been established in Central Clinical Military Hospital and contains 3 branches which are Military Surgery, Military Stomatology and Military Therapy .
According to Defence Minister’s order, in1998 The General Department of Military Surgery has been subdivided into 2 parts which are Military Surgery department including Stomatology series and Therapeutic Military department.
During the period of 1994-1996 MSD was led by professor, MD B. N. Harutyunyan , by docent, PhD M. G. Margaryan in 1997-1999, By MD M.H. Hovhannisyan in199-2002, by MD A.K.Hovhannisyan in 2002-2010, by MD S.S Hovhannisyan in 2011-2014 ,by PhD A.R.Grigoryan (Temporary in charge) during the period of 2014-2019 .
Since 2019 up to the present time the Head of Military Surgery Department is PhD K.R. Shaboyan.
According to the collaborative order of Defence Ministry and YSMU rector, since 2002 the surgical departments of Central Clinical Military Hospital were assigned status of Surgical Clinique, which involved departments of Thoracic and General Laparoscopic Surgery, Traumatology and Orthopedics, Urology, Vascular and Neurosurgery, Maxillo-facial Surgery, LOR and Ophthalmology, Anesthesiology, Reanimation and the Corpus of Blood Transfusion.
Education
Teaching Techniques
During the Educational cycle the first hour of each day is devoted to theoretical lecture, further 4 hours include practical skills. All kinds of dilemmatic situations under any types of severe and tense conditions, are being discussed with students, practical skills and solutions are constantly being demonstrated to them. Besides these, the Department has adopted a Skills Evaluation Component. Students participate visiting rounds, observe patients with gunshot injuries, students conduct bandaging of injuries and the most interested ones get the opportunity to participate in surgical operations.
An effective educational technique is developed by Military Surgery Department especially for MS faculty cadets, in order for them to be able to own the situation under any severe and tense conditions and is meant to provide their readiness to make rational decisions and perform their best under all kinds of conditions.
The educational cycle is finished by computer test examination for students of Military Surgery faculty, General Medicine faculty and Faculty of Stomatology, and the international students pass paper test exam for the subjects of Maxillo-Facial military surgery and Emergency traumatology.
Clinical Activity
-Each Monday visiting rounds are conducted for Surgical Departments’ patients
-There are permanent consiliums and collaborative discussions on daily basis
-Department’s lecturers are involved in clinical atmosphere of surgical corpuses
-Department’s stuff actively participates in treatment of injured people as a consequence of local conflicts.
Scientific Articles
Scientific activity is developed by department’s stuff along with clinical activity. Under the direct guidance of the Head of Military Surgery Department 2 doctoral researches and 3 PhD theses are being developed. Nowadays is actual the topic of gunshot injuries treatments utilizing the latest technologies and related to it entirely new methods are being developed in Military Surgery Department.
