History
In 1972, academician Emil Gabrielyan the rector of YSMU ordered to found the Pharmacy faculty at Medical University. In 1974, the Pharmaceutical and Toxicological Chemistry Department was opened and the first chairman of the Department was Gurgen T. Martirosyan, Doctor in chemical sciences (the assistants were PhD in chemical sciences Rudolf H. Hakobyan, Eduard A. Grigoryan, Nelly G. Nonezyan).
In 1980, the Pharmaceutical and Toxicological Chemistry Department joined with the Department of Organic chemistry and was headed by Doctor in chemical sciences, Professor Michael B. Ordyan.
In 1996- 2006, the department was headed by Lida A. Sahakyan.
In 2006, the department was separated and run by PhD in pharmaceutical sciences, Associate professor Christine B. Ashrafyan.
In 2008, on the basis of letter was established the multiprofile Department of Pharmacy for Pharmacy faculty students’ (pharmacology, clinical pharmacology, clinical pharmacy subjects were thought). The first head of the Department was Doctor in pharmaceutical sciences, Professor Marine G. Balasanyan, 2008-2011) who had a great contribution to the foundation of the Department and thought subjects.
In 2011, “Pharmacology”, “Clinical pharmacology” and “Clinical Pharmacy” subjects were separated and included in the corresponding departments.
From 2011 and then the Department of Pharmacy is headed by a PhD in pharmaceutical sciences, Associate professor, Аrusyak G. Zhamharyan.
Education
“Pharmaceutical Chemistry” and “Toxicological Chemistry” are thought since the establishment of the Department. In 2006 alongside with the above mentioned subjects new “Medicinal Chemistry”, “Toxicology” and “Pharmacokinetics” specialized subjects are taught to Bachelor’s 3rd and 4th years and Master’s of Pharmacy.
Teaching at the Department is conducted in Armenian, Russian and English languages to undergraduate and post graduate students. The following subjects are taught in our Department:
“Medicinal Chemistry” – Bachelor’s 3rd year, V-VI semesters
“Pharmaceutical Chemistry” – Bachelor’s 3rd-4th years, VI-VIII semesters,
Master’s I-II semesters, 5th year (Foreign students), IX-X semesters
“Toxicological Chemistry”- Bachelor’s 4th year, V semester
“Toxicology”- Bachelor’s 4th year, VI semester
“Pharmacokinetics” – Master’s, II semester, 5th year (Foreign students), X semester
Cyclic courses and classes are conducted by lectures and practical classes.
In our department the laboratory and practical classes are conducted at well-equipped laboratories.
The following professional subjects are toughed in Armenian to the college students with «Pharmacy» and «Laboratory Diagnostics» specialty:
«Pharmacology of Laboratory Diagnostics» -2 year, I semester
«Pharmaceutical Chemistry» -2 year, II semester
«Particular Pharmacology» -3 year, II semester
«Pharmaceutical Chemistry» -3 year, II semester
Postgraduate Education
Postgraduate Education is carried out by the Department through one year of Clinical Residency, Internship and PhD of three years duration. In our Department 5 and 7 weeks duration training courses are organized for pharmacists.
Scientific Research Projects
Scientific Research Projects
We carry out the following scientific research projects:
- “The design of COX enzyme new inhibitors based on nonprotein amino acids and dipeptides structure”;
- “GABA-ergic compounds of plant and synthetic origin neuroprotective activity study in rats brain local and global ischemic pathologies”;
- “Studies of compounds’ pharmacokinetic properties: evaluation of drugs bioavailability and bioequivalence”
- “The study of synthetic and natural origin compounds influence on experimentally caused wound processes”;
- “Furans series methyl-pentyl derivatives, methyl pentanic acid and carbonic acid pentyl-substituted amides synthesis and some transformations for the molecules structure activity relationship discovery”;
- “The electrochemical synthesis of biologically active polymers”.
We annually publish more than 15 scientific articles and abstracts within the local and foreign publications.
There is a student-scientific group in the department. The group is led by Anna P. Manjikyan who is an assistant in the Pharmacy department. Here the students participate in the scientific researches. Bachelor’s and Master’s students of Pharmacy faculty are involved in the group.
International Conferences
Our stuff systematically participates in local, national and international conferences. The DDDC International Pharmaceutical Conference was organized with the direct participation of department.
