History
Head of the Department: Alexander Sergey Malayan, D.Sc.(in medicine), professor
First Eye Department in Armenia was founded at the Yerevan State Medical Institute in 1928 under Haik Kanayan chairmanship,following him the Head of Department became famous armenian ophthalmologists Babken Melik-Musyan and Sergey Malayan.Latter on the Department was headed by Tatyana Hovsepyan and from 1991 up to now the Head of Department is professor A.S.Malayan
Education
Whole content of topics following programm is covered by Lectures and Practical sessions during Ophthalmology cycle.Study course is scheduled for 4-th year students of General Medecine Military and Stomatology faculties with 10 days cycle duration (60 hours).
During classroom teaching the students become familiar with basic ophthalmology. The practical sessions are dedicated to discussion of lectures’ topics and case studies. The students study anatomy and physiology of the eye, refraction,examination methods and treatment of eye diseases.Recently were published the educational manuals on different topics of ophthalmology under the authorship of faculty: »Neuroophthalmology» (2003), »Ophthalmology» (2006),»Eye examination» (2006) and also lectures on ophthalmology.
Postgraduating education
Postgraduating education is conducted as a Residency and Post-graduate course with 3 year duration respectively.
The Department of Ophthalmology is located at:Sergey Malayan Ophthalmological Centre (Head of Department, D.Sc.Professor Alexander Sergey Malayan), University Eye Clinic of YSMU(Chief of clinic D.Sc.Professor Armen Abraham Shakaryan), Eye department of Medical Center Shengavit(head of Department Ph.D. A.A.Zilphyan).
Scientific research work
At the Department are conducting following research works:
- Peculiarities investigation and treatment of complication in eye injuries
- Research in etio-pathogenesis and epidemiology of uveitis
- Surgical treatment of glaucoma
- Etio-pathogenetic therapy in retinal vasooclusive disorders
- Therapy of macular degeneration by intra-vitreal injections
- Early diagnosis and laser therapy in retinopathy of prematurity
Collaboration
Department of Ophthalmology,Stomatology Faculty,Yerevan State Medical University is in close scientific relations with Department of Ophthalmology: UCLA University, California; Doheney Eye Institute, Boston University, San-Francisko University.

Multiple presentations took a place during different republic and international congresses.

- Differential uveitis treatment in systemic diseases
- Anterior chamber shunts as an alternative treatment of glaucoma
- Study of peculiarities of postop inflammatory syndrome in cataract and its role in complications pathogenesis
About 25 scientific works by Faculty are published annually.
