Founded in 2011
The Departments of Surgery No 3 and No 4 were established on the basis of the Department of Surgery No 1 in 2011.
In 1934 the Department of Faculty Surgery was founded, which was first headed by Professor H.S. Kechek. Professor R.H. Yolyan – President of Armenian Surgeons’ Association, Corresponding Member of AMS USSR – began heading the Department in 1940. During that period the Blood Transfusion Research Institute was established (after R. Yolyan).
In 1955 – 1956 the department was headed by Associate Professor V.S. Soghomonyan; between 1956 and 1971 by Professor R.L. Paronyan; the author of the first volume of «Special Surgery» textbook.
From 1971 to 1988 the Department has been headed by Professor S.Z. Hovannisyan; the author of «Purulent Surgery» and «Pilonidal Fistulas» textbooks. Famous surgeons S.M. Galstyan, S.Kh. Avdalbekyan, A.A. Midoyan, H.H. Minasyan and H.A. Jaghinyan have worked at the Department.
In 1988 the Department was renamed being called «Department of Surgery No 1». From 1988 to 2008 departmental academic workings have been supervised by Professor H.V. Sarukhanyan. Starting from 1987 he has been heading the Armenian Surgeons’ Association and has been the head surgeon of RA Ministry of Health. He is the founder of «Armenian Surgery XXI – Professionals Association». On his own initiative Pan-Armenian International Surgical Congresses were organised in 2003 and 2008.
Since 2008 the Department is headed by Professor M.M. Mirijanyan. Concurrently, he is the head of the Surgical Clinic of «Heratsi» University Hospital. From 2001 to 2010 M.M. Mirijanyan has been the Dean of the General Medicine Faculty. Since 2002 Prof. Mirijanyan is a member of the University Professional Council «Surgery» and the president of the same council since 2008. Prof. Mirijanyan is a member of the Central Medical Committee of RA Ministry of Defence since 2010. He is the editorial board member of the «Theoretical and Clinical Issues» scientific journal and «Herald of Armenian Surgery» magazine.
Education
Teaching is conducted in the faculties of General Medicine and Military Medicine in Master’s Programme, as well as for the 6th year international students of the General Medicine Faculty. The course is introduced in lectures, seminars and practical classes, during which abdominal, thoracic and cardiac surgical diseases are analysed; ethiology, pathology, clinical presentation, differential diagnoses and treatment of diseases are discussed. Clinical cases, diagnostic and treatment methods of various diseases are discussed throughout the practical classes; visits to university surgical clinics are as well organised, where students participate in surgeries and perform night duties.
Postgraduate education
Duration of the postgraduate education is 3 years.
Research projects
Research activities of the department are related to endotoxicosis in surgical diseases.
