History
Until 1967, there was a “Dental Course”, which included surgical, therapeutic and orthopedic dentistry and had 25 graduates. This course has been led by Georgi Yeghyan since 1964. The department was located in the “Institute of Traumatology and Orthopedics”. Later, the department moved to the “Malatia” MC, from where in 1982, under the guidance of Kh.A. Badalyan, moved to the “Eighth clinical hospital”. In 2008, the department was transferred to the university hospital “Muratsan”, from where in 2010, the department moved to “Heratsi” university hospital.
Professor Sargis Ananyan, associate professors Gor Zalyan, Eduard Avetisyan, Gagik Kocharyan headed the chair of department for different years, who contributed to the educational and scientific development of the chair.
Since 2017, the department of Surgical Stomatology YSMU, the Department of Maxillofacial Surgery and the Department of Family Dentistry of the National Institute of Health after S. Avdalbekyan merged, on the basis of which the department of Surgical Stomatology and Maxillofacial Surgery was formed, which is currently headed by professor Gagik Hakobyan.
During these years, new trilingual curricula were created in the newly established department for students, residents, the textbook “Surgical Stomatology and Maxillofacial Surgery” was published for the students and residents , the textbook “Neuropathies of maxillofacial region” for the residents. Past three years, staff of departmens scientific articles published in international journals, which have given lectures in international congresses. The number of clinical residents in the department has steadily increased in recent years. During the last three years, the staff of the department has organized outgoing training courses for doctors in different regions of Armenia, in the Republic of Artsakh.
Training
Teaching in the department is conducted in three languages for the second-year students of the faculty of stomatology “Propedics of Surgical stomatology”;
For 3-5 year students of the faculty of stomatology, the subjects of “Surgical stomatology” are lectures and practical classes, including at the Center for Dental Excellence.
The subject “Maxillofacial Surgery” is taught in three languages for the students of General Medicine and the Faculty of Military Medicine.
In order to increase the efficiency of practical trainings, lectures, modern digital technologies are widely used in the chair.
Postgraduate education
Postgraduate education is offered by residency in “Surgical stomatology” (1.5 years), “Maxillofacial Surgery” (3 years), and for doctors with continuing medical education (1, 2,7 weeks).
Research
Scientific research is carried out in the chair in the following directions:
գ defects and deformations of the maxillary region
գ injuries of the maxillary region
գ neoplasms of the maxillary region
գ dental implantology
During the past 5 years, 3 PhD theses were defended at the chair, 3 plan annotations of the PhD thesis were approved, more than 90 scientific works were published, mostly in international scientific journals, some in prestigious scientific journals with an impact factor.
The chair’s employees have repeatedly participated and made presentations at various international congresses, both in the Republic of Armenia and abroad.

The clinical activity of the department is carried out in the following clinical bases: “Muratsan” University Hospital, “Heratsi” University Clinic No. 1, “Mikaelian University Hospital”.
