Department of General Surgery

Date of establishment 1954.
The head of chair: BARSEGHYAN HAYRAPET patronymic: ALEKSAN, Doctor of Medical Sciences, professor, deputy director of surgery of “Astghik” Medical Center.

The chair was created in 1954, on the bases of the newly opened surgery department of the forth hospital, in the composition of Sanitary and Hygienic faculty. The first manager of the chair was professor Paronyan Ruben patronymic:Lazar, who was the author of textbook “Surgery Diseases” written in mother language (in 1959). He was the surgeon-consultant at the infectious hospital.

Paronyan Ruben patronymic: Lazar was the first in the Republic, who was engaged in cytological examination of liver punctate, as well as he was the first who made stomach partition during ulcer diseases. Doctor of Medical Sciences (MD) Barseghyan Hayrapet patronymic: Aleksan has been managing the chair since 2001.

The professor is the author of more than 270 scientific works, textbooks and methodological manuals.

For the first time in Armenia in 2019 under the leadership of prof. H.A. Barseghyan, a liver transplant was performed from a living donor to the recipient. In 2016 the department of Surgery №2 was named to Department of General Surgery of YSMU.

After the formation of the faculties of  Pediatric Surgery in 1958 and the faculty of Stomatology in 1961, teaching of subject “Surgery” was organized in these faculties.

At present the chair of general surgery teaches the subjects “General Surgery” and “Surgical Diseases” (the third year) for the students of Military Medical Faculty, (the third year) and the students of Faculty of Stomatology (the third anf fourth year).  The teaching period includes practical trainings, lectures and duties. Practical trainings are hold in operating rooms, in dressing rooms, in ward rooms, diagnostic departments, on moldings and phantom equipments.

The library has been replenished with modern literature in Armenian, Russian and English languages. A live broadcast from operating room to the training rooms and classrooms was organized. Computer training programs in English language have been created in the chair, which include demonstration, theoretical and test materials, as well as the chair has acquired such programs of foreign authors. There are demonstration materials with all the themes of teaching subject in the created video.

The postgraduate education in the chair is presented with traineeship and postgraduate studies  (the duration of which is 3 years) in the specialties of general, abdominal, endocrine and laparoscopic surgery.

The scientific research works of the chair have the following directions:

• prevention and treatment of complications in abdominal surgery,
• complications prevention of operational treatment of diseases of thyroid, parathyroid glands,
• hepatopancreatobiliary surgery,
• liver transplant

The chair closely cooperates with surgical clinics of Russian Federation, Taiwan, Austria, Germany, Itaiy, India, thanks to what a lot of progress has been made in the field of liver transplantation, laparoscopic surgery.

The exchange of experience of educational and methodological work at the department is carried out through consultations, clinical conferences.

The study of the experience of educational and methodological work of foreign medical universities is carried out through videoconferencing, international conferences and meetings.
