History
Was founded in 1924
Department was founded by the professor Grigor Mednikyan. He was one of the first lecturers of Yerevan State University medical faculty and the armenian doctor of the soviet union`s senior generation, who, together with the president of National Health Committee – Semyon Lazarev, the president of National Education Committee – Askanaz Mravyan, rector of the University – Hakob Hovhannisyan, had significant role in the foundation and development of the faculty.
In 1935 Grigor Mednikyan defended doctor`s thesis “Comparative pharmacology of some derivatives of nicotine”. He is the author of large number of monographs and tutorials.
More than the half century (1936-1988) department was directed by the prominent and skilled teacher, academician of NAS RA – Simon Hakob Mirzoyan, whose many years steadily efforts realized foundation of new day internationally recognized armenian school of pharmacologists. The works of renowned scienist have great interest and were cited many times in the international medical scientific literature.
S. Mirzoyan, together with his collective, was investigating the new drugs of natural and synthetic origin and at the end years of it`s working activity – pharmacological aspects of brain blood circulation. 1971-1978 he was the president of the MoH RA medical-scientific council.
1988-1994 department was directed by the academician of the NAS RA – Emil Samson Gabrielyan. He was the first implemented computer-based studying program in the Republic of Armenia, which was prized by the diplomas and the prize of educational state committee. By his direction, prof. E.A. Amroyan, associate professors – A.H. Ayvazyan, E.A. Margaryan were investigating the actions of blood compounds on the vessels, their role in the regulation of cerebral vascular tone. E. S. Gabrielyan was presenting many times the results of working group researches in the international scientific conferences.
1971-1975 E. Gabrileyan was the rector of Yerevan State Medical University, 1975-1989 – the minister of RA Health Ministry.
1994-2006 department was directed by NAS RA academician – Vilen Paruyr Hakobyan. By his direction, the principally innovated teaching-examination computer-based program was implemented in the department in english, russian and armenian languages. He and prof. S.H. Mirzoyan, in the field of brain blood circulation pharmacology, had the first great success not only in Armenia, but also in former USSR area.
By the direction of V. Hakobyan was further developed the theory of autoregulatory neurochemical system of brain blood circulation. Professors V.P. Hakobyan, A.H. Manukyan, M.G. Balasanyan, associate professors L.S. Balyan, K.V. Melkonyan, A.V. Baykov were justified that hypokinesia is multicomponent pathological factor of the hemodynamic changes, which are associated with the development of disorders of the brain blood flow`s all regulatory mechanisms. Their researches, related to protein, carbohydrate exchange, brain morphological condition, the activity of prooxidant and antioxidant systems, revealed the appropriate regulatory pharmacological pathways during deterioration of brain blood flow.
2006-2007 the department was directed by the PHD, associate professor Ruben Stepan Bekyan, 2007-2008 –PharmD, professor Marine Garnik Balasanyan, 2008-2011-MD, professor Armen Hakob Manukyan.
2011-present the department is directed again by the MD, professor M. Balasanyan. By her direction in the department are holding researches related to the pharmacological correction of brain local ischemic deteriorations by the GABA – ergic and biological active substances.
Education
In the department education is holding during 2 terms for general medicine and pharmaceutical faculty students (lectures- 34 hours, practical classes – 136 hours) and for dentistry faculty students – during 1 term (lectures – 17 hours, practical classes – 68 hours). The topics, in the relevance with the program, are presenting and are given to the students during lectures and practical classes. During practical classes are discussed the ongoing topics of pharmacology, are holding oral, written form summary classes. Lectures are being presented by the PowerPoint program. During each term are holding written test-based summary classes.
Postgraduate education
Postgraduate education is realized by the 3 year duration doctorate.
Scientific researches
In the department scientific researches are holding by the 3 main directions.
