Acting Head of Chair: Harutyun Minasyan, PhD in Medical Sciences, Associate Professor
The Chair was formed back in 1925 as part of the medical department of Yerevan State University when the Higher School of Medicine was just being formed. Professor Hambardzum Kechek, President of the Society of Armenian Doctors, alumnus of St. Petersburg Military Medical Academy, played a significant role in its formation.
In 1940-1956 another alumnus of St. Petersburg Military Medical Academy, academician Ruben Yolyan, who had been the president of Armenian Society of Surgeons since 1938, served as head of the Chair. Under his leadership, during these years the textbooks “Military Field Surgery” and “Private Surgery” were published and Hematology Research Institute was established.
In 1956-1971 the Chair was headed by Professor Ruben Paronyan who developed the method of liver puncture and assessment of results and who also authored the first part of the textbook “Private Surgery”.
In 1971-1988 head of Chair was Professor Suren Hovhannisyan. The Chair was a powerful forge of surgery; renowned surgeons and scientists H. Minasyan, N. Galstyan, S. Avdalbekyan, A. Midoyan, S. Hovhannisyan and others have emerged from it.
In 1988-2008 the Chair was headed by Professor Hovhannes Sarukhanyan.
In 2011, Surgery Chairs No. 3 and No. 4 were formed on the basis of Chair No. 1.
In 2011-2022 Surgery Chair No. 3 continued to be headed by Professor Hovhannes Sarukhanyan. In 1987-2016 he served as head of the Armenian Association of Surgeons, later becoming its Honorary President; in 1987-2018 he was the Chief Specialist of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Armenia.
In 2000, thank to Hovhannes Sarukhanyan’s efforts, the Armenian Surgery XXI, Union of Professionals was founded. On his initiative, Pan-Armenian International Surgical Conferences were organized in 2003, 2008 and 2013. In 2018, the Surgical Chair No. 3 was named after Professor Sarukhanyan. In 2019, H. Sarukhanyan was granted the title of Honorary Professor of Yerevan State Medical University.
Since April 2022 Associate Professor Harutyun Minasyan has been Acting Head of the Chair.
Renowned specialists, Professors H. Kushkyan, G. Mkhoyan, L. Minasyan, M. Mirijanyan, A. Minasyan, PhD H. Sarkavagyan and others have conducted scientific, pedagogical and medical activities at the Chair.
Education
The education at Chair is organized for local and international students of 4th, 5th and 6th years of Departments of General Medicine and Military Medicine and 4th year of Department of Dentistry; as well as this, postgraduate education is offered to resident doctors, surgeons undergoing training and postgraduate students. Classes are held in operating rooms, surgical and diagnostic departments. During practical classes students participate in the examination of patients, bandaging, surgeries, as well as night shifts.

Research
The main research topic of the chair is “The features of the treatment of surgical diseases and injuries of abdominal organs in the adult’s (60 or more) group.”
The following researchs are also carried out at the Chair:
- “The issues of pathogenesis, prevention and treatment of Polytraumas”
- “Indications for relaparatomy and analysis of the performed surgical interventions”
- “The impact of the Covid-14 viral infection on the course of surgical pathologies”.
