History
The department of Epidemiology of Yerevan State Medical University was founded by the professor A.B.Aleksanyan in1935. The department was headed by prof. A.B.Aleksanyan (1935-1971), prof. K.M.Deghdzunyan (1971-1990), ass. arof. V.H.Hovasapyan (1990-1995), prof. A.Dz.Hambardzumyan (1995-2011), prof. H.S.Hovhannisyan (2011-2014), prof. A.Dz.Hambardzumyan (2014-present). Research priorities of department were – urgent issues of epidemiology and clarification of problems of the regional pathology. In 1976 in the department was organized the first laboratory of the prevention of hospital-acquired infections in the Caucasus, which scientific achievements were used for the prevention and control of nosocomial infections.
The department staff has investigated the antibacterial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory properties of “Narine” lactic acid bacteria and their metabolism products and they are used in various fields – for the treatment and prevention of purulent-inflammatory diseases, as well as in cosmetics production (prof. A.Hambardzumyan). The Department has greatly contributed to sale lactic acid bacteria “Narine” to Japan. At present the main scientific direction of the department is study of the new features of epidemic process under the new social-economic conditions, as well as investigations using the latest molecular epidemiological methods are carried out.
Prof. A.B.Aleksanyan and prof. K.M.Deghdzunyan many years were headed the scientific organization of epidemiologists and microbiologists, which in 2000 was reorganized into the “Association of epidemiologists, medical parasitologists and microbiologists” (Chairman: Prof. A.Dz.Hambardzumyan).
